Crested Care

Hairless:

Hairless Chinese Cresteds require weekly bathing.  Their skin can be prone to breakouts, so we suggest using only sensitive shampoo and conditioner without perfumes.  We use a emu oil shampoo and spray on our hairless Chinese cresteds as well as our powderpuffs!  The hairless variety also requires protection from the sun and from the cold.  In the sun you should put sunscreen on all of the naked parts to prevent burns.  We also like to throw tee shirts on our hairless Chinese Cresteds.  In the winter, hairless require clothes when taken outdoors.  My hairless chinese cresteds all have pj's and coats, as well as booties.  Even in the house it is sometimes necessary to put pj's on them so they stay warm, but be careful that they don't get over-heated and NEVER use wool clothing as they will react.  The best rule of thumb to remember is that if a 2 year old would need protection from the elements, so does your hairless chinese crested baby!

Powderpuff:

Powderpuff Chinese Cresteds require being brushed at least weekly.  Some colors and coats are more prone to getting knotted and may require more care. Chinese Crested powderpuffs require trimming a few times per year.  Some people let the coat grow long, while others prefer the coat to be kept short for easy care.  Powderpuffs can also be shaved into a pony cut, if desired.  I use a special Emu oil shampoo and spray which keeps their coat really soft and tangle-free. Please contact me for more information on Powderpuffs!
Chinese Crested Powderpuff and Hairless dogs enjoy human contact and do not do well in situations where they are left alone most of the time.  Some Chinese Cresteds are active and enjoy running around and playing a lot, while others make great couch potatoes!  All Chinese Cresteds require exercise and can be prone to being over-weight.  The average life span for a Chinese Crested is 14 years.

Chinese Cresteds are allergic to wool and lanolin - which can be found in many hand creams - so please be careful!

Chinese Cresteds are well-known in the agility ring - they are bright, affectionate and become very attached to their owners.

Both hairless and powderpuffs can make great pets - it is important to find a reputable breeder who will work with you to find a hairless or powderpuff Chinese Crested that will suit your family's needs and desires.
